Most homeowners have experienced an unhealthy lawn at some point. There are several types of lawn diseases which present themselves in different ways. Leaf spots, dead or discolored patches of grass, and foreign, powdery growths are just a few symptoms of lawn disease. These diseases are both harmful and unsightly. The key to keep this nastiness from invading your lawn is knowing how it works.

Most lawn disease originates from fungi that reside in your lawn's soil and grass blades or close to the roots. These fungi live in your lawn even when it's healthy, but they don't make their presence known until the opportunity arises. Weak turf, stressful conditions, or a combination of both creates a situation where infectious fungus can thrive.

Prolonged periods of wet turf due to poor drainage and intense heat are conditions that facilitate fungal growth. If your lawn's turf is poorly developed, underfed, or otherwise stressed, it can be extremely vulnerable to lawn disease. While fungicide can help fight lawn disease once it's taken hold, the best method is to prevent it from ever getting started. Proper watering and mowing plus regular fertilization help build a vital lawn that can neutralize fungal attacks and prevent disease.
